About

Jessup is the world’s largest moot court competition, with participants from roughly 700 law schools in 100 countries and jurisdictions. The Competition is a simulation of a fictional dispute between countries before the International Court of Justice, the judicial organ of the United Nations. Teams prepare oral and written pleadings arguing both the applicant and respondent positions of the case.

Team Member Application

Who Can Participate in the Selection Process?

Students enrolled in the II, III, and IV years of the undergraduate program and the I and II years of the master’s program at the Baku State University Faculty of Law for the 2026/2027 academic year are eligible to register for the selection stage. The team representing the University in the Competition shall consist of a maximum of 5 (five) members.

Coach Application

General Information

The Coach provides guidance on various issues to the team throughout the competition. The issues include, but are not limited to, the following:
– instruction on the basic principles of international law;
– guidance on research sources and methods;
– guidance on Memorial writing techniques;
– guidance on oral advocacy techniques;
– guidance on the organization and structure of arguments in the Team’s written and oral pleadings.

Requirements

– Knowledge or practical experience in public international law (UN Charter, international court procedures, state responsibility, etc.);
– Strong command of academic and legal English;
– Availability of at least 8-12 hours per week between June and March.

Preferred Qualifications

– Advanced law degree (LL.M. and higher or equivalent);
– Prior experience in Jessup or another international moot court competition as a participant, coach, or judge;
– Practical experience at an international law firm, UN body, ICC, ECHR, or other international institution;
– Current or past academic position (lecturer, PhD candidate, or researcher) at BSU or another university;
– Strong analytical writing skills, particularly in legal memorials, briefs, or academic articles.
